Vein Center

We’re excited to offer this exclusive onsite facility to our patients!

The state-of-the-art facility at Desert Vascular Specialists features an in-office Vein Center, where patients receive vein treatments for varicose veins and spider veins, including laser, injections, minor surgery, and sclerotherapy. Only the best equipment and latest technology is used in the Vein Center.

Vein Treatment

Advancements in medicine have allowed for more sophisticated treatment of varicose and spider veins. Varicose veins can be treated in the office using lasers, injections, or minor surgical removals. The procedures usually take less than an hour to complete and no real downtime. Often the treatment of varicose veins is covered by insurance. At Desert Vascular, these treatments are performed by a Vascular Surgeon in a dedicated procedure room equipped with an ultrasound and the latest in Angiodynamics® laser technology.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are swollen or bulging veins. They are associated with family history of varicose veins, pregnancy or hormone replacement and advanced age. They are often painful and if left untreated can swell and ulcerate. Medical imaging with an ultrasound is helpful to diagnose the precise location of the damaged valves. This ultrasound “mapping” provides the information necessary for treatment and is often covered by insurance.

Spider Veins

Spider veins are red or purple small thread like veins close to the skin. These do not usually pose a health risk but can be embarrassing. Treatments are aimed at reducing the appearance of the veins using small injections known as sclerotherapy.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an injection of a painless solution into spider veins. Still considered the “gold standard” of care for spider vein treatment. Unlike laser treatment that is painful and require 6-10 treatments, small injections provide relief of the unsightly veins in 2-3 sessions and often provide longer lasting results. A free consultation can help decide the appropriate treatment plan for your spider veins.

Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT)

A laser treatment designed to eliminate diseased or damaged veins that cause pain and swelling in the legs. The procedure is done in the office in about an hour with just local anesthetic and virtually no downtime. The procedure begins by placing a laser fiber into the damaged vein under ultrasound guidance. The area around the vein is then numbed and the laser is turned on. As the laser fiber is pulled back the vein is sealed closed. This is a nice alternative to traditional “vein stripping”. This procedure is FDA approved and has many clinical studies showing its effectiveness is eliminating pain and swelling associated with varicose veins. This procedure is typically covered by insurance including Medicare and AHCCCS.

Clinical Studies

Microambulatory Phlebectomy

A simple in office procedure that involves minor surgical removal of bulging veins. This procedure begins with numbing the area using local anesthetic. Small incisions are made along the length of the vein. Through each small incision a segment of the vein is removed using a specialized instrument similar to a crochet hook. Once the vein is removed the incision is covered with a steri-strip. The incisions heal in about a week and typically do not require sutures. Normal walking and light activity can be resumed immediately after the treatment.

Foam Sclerotherapy

A specialized medication is used to inject a varicose vein causing the vein to seal off and be absorbed by the body over time. This can be done under ultrasound guidance or with a transluminator (special light to see through the skin) as needed. This addresses any branches of varicose veins that cannot be treated with laser or removed with a phlebectomy. This procedure is safely done in the office in about 30 minutes.

Visual (Cosmetic) Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a 15 to 30 minute procedure that involves injection of a painless solution into spider veins. The body then absorbs the vein over 2-6 weeks thereby reducing the appearance. Sclerotherapy is still considered the “gold standard” for the treatment of spider veins. Unlike the topical laser treatments that are typically painful and require 6-10 treatments, sclerotherapy is more comfortable and can reduce the appearance of unsightly veins in 2-3 sessions. When compared to laser treatments, sclerotherapy can provide longer lasting results and with less risk of scarring or discoloring the skin. The treatment is comfortably performed without the need for anesthetic. A free consultation can help decide the appropriate treatment plan for your spider veins.

Summary

In most cases, varicose veins are treated with a combination of these. The treatment plan is determined based on a detailed ultrasound mapping of the veins performed at our onsite imaging center. At Desert Vascular Specialist we do as much in one treatment as possible to reduce the need for multiple procedures. This reduces the total cost, time off of work and length of time in recovery. We are happy to offer a second opinion if you are unsure about any recommendations you have received.
